Another version of the song that meant a lot to me about ten years ago.
This is Hannah Reid. You know when you hear someone on the radio and wonder what they look like- and then when you see they are totally different to what you expected? Well this happened to me with London Grammar and now I want to marry them all. She kind of reminds me of Cara Delevigne merged with a bit of Emma Watson, and sounds like Florence. Amazing cover.... You'd be blind to not notice a massive resurgence of the '1990's' in our mainstream cultural landscape today; well unless you smoke pot and hide in a room or something. I'l list what I'm talking about anyway: - Ant and Dec's 'Lets get Ready to Rumble' getting to number 1. - Alice Deejay sample in David Guettas 'Play Hard' - 'Fresh' 'Dope' acts like Danny County (pictured right) on The Voice sporting hideous patterned/tie dye shirts whilst remaining ridiculously cool (along the lines of Joey Essex styling) - Acts like Kreayshawn and more recently Syron (think hooped earings, crop tops, oversized jackets) Check out the video below if you haven't already and you'll see what I mean. - Resurrection of Kappa (YES I HAD A TRACKSUIT WITH THE POPPERS!) www.dazeddigital.com/fashion/article/16091/1/fashion-archive-kappa - This is all well and good and I think its quite acceptable to draw upon the 90's as a decade of influential music, style and trends, but what's bothering me is how we are going to regurgitate and reinvent the 2000's. It seems we've become obsessed with pastiche in fashion juxtaposed with modern pieces/sounds to create our own interpretation of a particular fad or genre. So it seems inevitable that we're going to pick up on the naughties at some point or another? It seems way to soon to be thinking about reminiscing over the first decade of the millennium but TV shows and mediocre pop acts are cashing in on it through this 'Big Reunion' malarkey. Its way too soon for artists like Blue to be getting back together, it seems 5 minutes ago that they split up. In fact the whole idea of going watching these bands makes me feel a bit sick- I mean why would anyone want to put money in Kerry Katonas pocket?! Maybe I'm just cynical and getting old. Grown ups always did say things like 'god it seems like yesterday when that was at number one' - whilst pointing at TOTP2 on tele. I don't think it was particularly memorable era in terms of fashion. One thing I pray will not return is this grotesque thing..... Anyway, in conclusion I would like to finish with a quote! I think how remarkably relevant this is today. So lets not go backwards and keep things moving in the right direction! DB: The way fashion is presented these days is a quantum leap from how it was presented say, five to ten years ago. It's become almost a new form, hasn't it? David Bowie- 1995 interview with Alexander McQueen |
